Forests are places that are usually associated with placid walks, family enjoyment or the practice of sports. But we must not forget that forests are also places of legend, mystery and superstition.

Streams of water that overwhelm when they descend with all their bravura. Twisted branches that become threatening at sunset. Nocturnal sounds of unknown origin. And dark caves, refuge of who knows what strange beings?

Oh, what a tingling sensation. That feeling halfway between fascination and fear. You like it, don't you?

Great, because in Zugarramurdi you have a great example of it. But don't forget that it is not the only one in Navarra. The caves of Urdax and Mendukilo are not far behind, you'll see.

do you want us to tell you about all of them? Well, keep reading because here is everything you need to know to organize your excursions through the most enigmatic Navarre.

what is so special about this site that thousands of people visit it every year, being as it is lost in the Navarrese Pyrenees, in a village of 20 inhabitants, where time seems to have stopped?

Perhaps that is part of its charm. The abundance of pastures, the sound of the cowbells or the fog and the txirimiri, which help to give it that halo of mystery that attracts us so much.

And also contribute the mythical defeat of Charlemagne, the treasures of his artistic legacy and of course, everything that implies being the Gateway of the Camino in Spain.

But if we had to choose two words to define Orreaga/Roncesvalles they would be these

It is a millenary ecosystem in which beech, elm, oak, maple and ash trees coexist.

The pools and small waterfalls that you will find along the route collect water from the Urbasa-Andía Natural Park.

And they are so crystalline that they may seem unreal, as if they were digitally retouched. But they are not. They are the work of nature; without trap or cardboard. And for sure, for sure, they will leave you hallucinating.

The trail starts from the village of Baquedano and is well signposted. It is 6.2 kilometers long and has 90 meters of elevation gain, being accessible to all audiences. It will take you between 2 and 3 hours to walk it -with hiking shoes, of course- depending on the stops you make.

The attraction of this pre-Pyrenean area of eastern Navarre are two of its gorges, sculpted by the Irati and Salazar rivers over millions of years. So what awaits you here is a terrain of steep walls whose hollows are inhabited by large birds of prey, among other animals.

When you arrive at the Foz de Lumbier, you are greeted by a rugged, green and abrupt environment that has been a Nature Reserve since 1987. But don't let appearances deceive you because it is very easy to walk through it, and in a moment we will tell you the details.

Before getting into the subject, you may be interested to know that you can leave your vehicle in a parking lot very close to the access to the Foz. In high season it is a paid parking -at a modest price-. Nearby you will find an information point, a picnic area and public toilets.

Olite Castle

Imagine a town with cobblestone streets, noble mansions, medieval galleries and splendid churches, a beautiful castle dominating the town with impressive towers...

It is almost certain that you associate the name of Olite with its Royal Palace. It is only natural that such a jewel should be so well known. And although we agree that the palace is the number one reason to visit Olite, it is equally true that there is no better setting for the palace to shine than its charming old town

This small town of just over 3,000 inhabitants is a network of sturdy manor houses with imposing coats of arms on the facades, Roman walls, Gothic arcades and beautiful churches.

Passing through the gateway of the Torre del Chapitel and accessing the Plaza Carlos III, admiring the stately town hall and sipping a glass of wine on one of the terraces will give you a fantastic perspective of life in Olite.

In the western Pyrenees, on the banks of the Bidasoa River and very close to the Cantabrian Sea, in a village called Oieregi, there is a dense and colorful forest, where nature and legend merge into one. This wild space has at its entrance a beautiful garden decorated with delicate modernist and Art Nouveau motifs.

It is the Señorío de Bertiz. And it is a place with so much magic, that if you stroll along its paths and come across a lamia, it would not seem strange to you.

The lamias, by the way, were mermaids who traveled the rivers singing and combing their hair with golden combs. According to legend, their task was to protect the forests of the Bertizarana Valley.

And it seems that they did a good job, because the Señorío de Bertiz is a well-preserved forest with an excellent biodiversity, which you can walk through and enjoy in your own way.

The Irati Forest

The Irati Forest is the second largest and best preserved beech-fir forest in Europe, after the Black Forest in Germany.

An extensive forest that, although it has been exploited forestry since the 15th century, is preserved in great shape thanks to the respect shown to it by the citizens of these valleys.

Beeches, oaks, firs, birches, willows, ferns and mosses, among others, are home to deer, roe deer, wild boar and a multitude of other inhabitants, which give this environment a great environmental richness.
